Overview: Physicists conduct studies and experiments in areas such as nuclear energy, electricity, heat, acoustics, light & lasers, and magnetism in support of the development of new technology and products. They use instruments ranging from atomic cyclotrons to electron microcopes.
Duties: They perform experiments in laboratories as members of research teams responsible for developing new technology & products. Theoretical physicists focus on discovery of new theories.

Confer with product development engineers to identify their research needs. Projects can deal with nuclear energy, light, lasers, magnetism in fields such as medicine, computers, space.

They make extensive use of mathematics & require the use of computers in order to analyze the results of their experiments. They use instruments such as radio telecopes & atomic cyclotrons.

Confer with product development engineering team members to determine how to use research findings in support of developing products or technology that can be used or marketed.

Degree(s): A.S. Engineering Science

Salary Range (National Average): $48,000 to $54,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: An advanced degree, typically a doctoral degree is the usual educational requirement for jobs in research and development or teaching in 4-year colleges and universities. Those having a bachelor's or a master's degree can qualify for positions in laboratory testing and measurement.
