Gynecologist (MD)

Overview: Gynecologists diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of female urinary, genital, reproductive and rectal organs. They perform annual checkups and prescribe medications, diets, exercise and hygiene practices for a woman's lifestages. They also advise patients in fertility practices.
Duties: They conduct medical examinations and diagnoses health disorders for female patients. Specialize in health problems dealing with female reproductive, urinary and genital organs.

They prescribe medication and diet for females depending upon their specific health status and problems. They recommend exercise programs to improve body tone and cardiological functioning.

Educate their patients about the kind of symptoms they should be most alert about depending upon their age and the precautions they must take to avoid female disorders.

They advise patients about their fertility by conducting laboratory tests and physical examinations. Treat patients to increase their fertility.

Starting Salary: The average annual starting salary in HMO's, clinics and medical group offices is about $130,000 per year. Experienced gynecologists can earn over $300,000 per year.

Education Level: This occupation generally requires an advanced degree (e.g. Ph.D.). The typical commitment is a minimum of 3 years of study beyond a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
Additional Training/Education: All states require gynecologists to be licensed. Licensing involves graduation from a medical school (usually 4 years), passing an examination, and up to 7 years of "residency" graduate medical training in gynecology. The minimum educational requirement for acceptance to most medical schools is 3 years of college study.
