Obstetrician (MD)

Overview: Obstetricians treat pregnant women and deliver their babies. During pregnancy they check the condition of the fetus by means of sound generated images, sample the placenta fluids. Advise diet changes and avoidance of drugs, alcohol, medications. Perform cesarean surgery.
Duties: They examine and treat pregnant women to sustain the health of the woman and her unborn fetus. Advise women of pre-natal care such as exercise, medication, diet and avoidance of drugs and alcohol.

They monitor the fetus development and check for abnormalities by means of ultra-sound images, taking samples of the placenta fluid and monitoring the fetus heart beat.

They determine whether the delivery of the baby will require any unusual procedures including the possibility of a Cesarean delivery. Advise the mother about labor signs and symptoms.

They make arrangements to admit the mother into the hospital for delivery, deliver the baby and administer post-delivery medical care to mother and baby.

Education Level: This occupation generally requires an advanced degree (e.g. Ph.D.). The typical commitment is a minimum of 3 years of study beyond a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
Additional Training/Education: All states require obstetricians to be licensed. Licensing involves graduation from a medical school (usually 4 years), passing an examination, and up to 7 years of "residency" graduate medical training in obstetrics. The minimum educational requirement for acceptance to most medical schools is 3 years of college study.
