Radiologist (MD)

Overview: Radiologists diagnose and treat human diseases by using X-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance scanning methods. They diagnose bone diseases and breaks, treat tumors with radiation therapy and diagnose internal organ problems by injecting opaque fluids in the body.
Duties: Radiologists examine internal body structures and functions of organ systems and make diagnoses after integrating all information from X-ray findings and laboratory tests.

They test benign and malignant internal and external tumors by exposure to radiations from X-rays or implanting radioisotopes in affected body areas.

They administer substances into patient's body orally, enemas or injection which show up as opaque on X-rays. Use live TV to observe opaque materials in patient's body.

Confer with surgeons to determine need for surgery and the surgical methods which are most appropriate to remove or repair the affected areas.

Education Level: Candidates for this occupation generally have completed their Bachelor’s Degree and have continued their education either 1 or 2 years longer.
Additional Training/Education: All states require radiologists to be licensed. Licensing involves graduation from a medical school (usually 4 years), passing an examination, and up to 7 years of "residency" graduate medical training in radiology. The minimum educational requirement for acceptance to most medical schools is 3 years of college study.
