Electronics Technician

Overview: Electronic technicians apply the principles of electronics, electrical circuits, engineering mathematics and physics to build, test and trouble shoot equipment such as computers, guided missile controls, computer controlled machines & stereo systems. They work in labs & plants.
Duties: They assist electronics engineers with research on new design concepts for electronic appliances, systems and components.

Follow electronic engineering specifications to prepare electronic logic, schematics and diagrams for newly proposed products.

Prepare maintenance and trouble shooting information to be used by field engineers who must diagnose and repair equipment problems and failures.

Test prototype versions of new products to determine what improvements are needed to make new products operate efficiently and trouble free.

Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: A 2-year college associate degree or a technical institute certificate is the usual requirement. A knowledge of computer-aided design is essential. Graduates of programs approved by the Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology are given preference for job openings.
Advancement Info: Electronic Technicians usually begin by doing routine duties. They work under the close supervision of experienced technicians or engineers. As they gain experience, technicians are given more difficult assignments and have less supervision. Electronic technicians with leadership skills may advance to supervisor positions. Keeping their skills current through continuing education classes helps technicians to advance.
