Overview: Tool & machine designers design power equipment used in metal work manufacturing such as cutters and drills. They confer with engineers to decide upon tool materials and specifications. They use algebra and geometry to decide upon machine configurations.
Duties: They design machinery such as milling machine cutters, drills, multi-edged cutting tools, jigs, dies and fixtures used for mass production or for experimental use in metal working shops.

Study specifications and confer with engineering and shop workers to resolve design problems dealing with metals used, measurements, user procedures, etc.

Use algebra and geometry formulations in the design of machinery configurations. They use computer-assisted design programs to visualize 3-dimensional characteristics.

Conduct experiments with newly designed machinery to evaluate and specify accuracy, breakdowns, safety, efficiency and worker training requirements.

Degree(s): A.S. Engineering Science

Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: An associate degree in engineering technology with a concentration in mechanical engineering, materials science and manufacturing processes is the basic educational requirement for this occupation. Courses in quality control, industrial engineering and computer-aided design are essential. Some employers require a bachelor's degree.
