Industrial Engineer
Overview: | Industrial engineers plan the efficient utilization of industrial production equipment, machines, and workers. They specify the flow of raw materials and products through the manufacturing process. They specify how productivity should be measured and improved to cut costs. |

Duties: | Study the flow of work needed for human oprators and machines to produce the desired product. Determine the optimum ways to combine people and machines and methods to be used. They develop methods to measure the quality and quantity of the products made and how to reduce the errors made. Observe workers performing their jobs and interviews them to determine what work methods and job arrangements can improve productivity. They hold group interviews with workers. They conduct productivity experiments to evaluate new methods to perform a job. Statistically analyze productivity results from experiments. They make recommendations to executives. |

Additional Training/Education: | A bachelor's degree from an accredited engineering program is the typical requirement for entry positions. Some employers require a master's degree. All 50 states require registration for engineering positions that may affect life, health or property of the public. Registration generally requires a bachelor's degree, four years of working experience and passing a state examination. |
Advancement Info: | Industrial engineers advance by working on more complex manufacturing processes. Beginning engineering graduates usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers and, in large companies, also may receive formal classroom or seminar-type training. As new engineers gain knowledge and experience, they are assigned more difficult projects with greater independence to develop designs, solve problems, and make decisions. Engineers may advance to become technical specialists or to supervise a staff or team of engineers and technicians. |
