Overview: Agricultural Engineers design and supervise building of machinery and structures needed for production, storage and processing of food products. Their designs are based on protecting foods against humidity, sunlight, insects & bacteria.
Duties: Design new tractors and machines for planting, fertilizing and harvesting farm crops. Work with manufacturing engineers to assure equipment will meet product development specifications.

They evaluate ideas and concepts for new equipment by field testing experimental versions of the equipment.

Design machinery for food processing plants to sort, weigh and package food products such as vegetables, fruit and eggs.

They work with architects to design storage facilities for food products such as silos and warehouses with controlled humidity, temperature and sunlight.

Degree(s): A.S. Engineering Science 
Job Outlook: Employment in this field is projected to grow 2% to 4% from 2018 to 2028, which is slightly slower than the average projected growth for all occupations.
Salary Range (National Average): $46,000 to $48,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from a four to five year accredited engineering program is usually required for beginning jobs. A strong background in mechanical engineering, agricultural mechanization, agronomy, soil science, agricultural economics and farm management are essential.
Advancement Info: Agricultural engineers may become technical specialists. They may also supervise a staff of engineers and technicians. Some engineers become project managers. Others may enter technical sales. Some agricultural engineers may advance to executive positions in larger companies. Experience is important for advancement. Opportunities will be best for workers with excellent communication and administrative skills. Demand will be highest for those with up-to-date computer and technical skills.
