Overview: Environmental engineers conduct studies to determine the best methods to detect and measure the size and severity of pollution sources, and the best approaches to clean up pollutions resulting from oil spills, chemical and air contaminants.
Duties: They perform laboratory and field experiments to create accurate methods for detecting sources of pollution, measuring its intensity & estimating its impact on humans, animals, plants, etc.

They experiment with different methods to clean-up oil spills in oceans, lakes, rivers, etc. and contamination of ground water and soil by chemicals or other waste products from industry & towns.

Advise government agencies, industries & communities about the maximum limits of pollution that can be tolerated by the environment. They recommend pollution standards and guidelines.

They direct and manage the clean-up activities for large scale pollution (oil and chemical spills) into our waters or soil and create recovery plans and actions needed after clean-up.

Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree in environmental sciences and environmental engineering with courses in ecology, natural resource management and environmental management is required for this occupation. A master's degree will increase your chances for promotion to management positions.
