No method nor discipline can supersede the necessity of being forever on the alert.  What is a course of history, or philosophy, or poetry, no matter how well selected, or the best society, or the most admirable routine of life, compared with the discipline of looking always at what is to be seen?  Will you be a reader, a student merely, or a seer?

Henry David Thoreau
Walden; or, Life in the Woods
1854

No, I do not weep at the world - I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife.*

Zora Neale Hurston
How It Feels to Be Colored Me
1928

The QCC Department of Art and Design and QCC Art Gallery proudly present the 2022 Annual Juried Student Exhibition.

As we emerge from the greater restrictions of the pandemic one witnesses flickering smiles of hope and cautious exhalations as if we are returned, back from through the looking glass. And one hears also murmurs of nothing will ever be the same - is it ever? Push, pull, carry through and tether in life what fosters living. Thoreau and Hurston with little else in common both carpe opportunus, life, he dryly and she in poetic optimism. Young artists too, willfully blossom, oblivious to, or perhaps in spite of, relative isolation and lack of luxury. Congratulations and warm gratitude. Seers all, are ye. You prise free, seeking, fashioning, with your tools and from your place, pearls.

*I had to explain to my friend, of believed considerable intelligence, "she doesn't weep, instead she looks for pearls"
