Josefina Aguado Scholarship for Single Parents

This scholarship opens in January of each year.


Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must:

1) be a single parent with children no older than 21 years of age,
2) be of Puerto Rican descent,
3) have a minimum GPA of 3.0,
4) be enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree,
5) undergo a virtual interview with the Selection Committee (in English or Spanish).
6) Applicants cannot be a former Comité Noviembre scholarship awardee of any CN Scholarships.

Application Materials/Process:

A completed application package must include:

1) An application form

2) An essay: In 500 words, answer the following questions: "What is the most important issue affecting the Puerto Rican community today?" State how you would address the issue as a leader in the community. Give examples of how you would resolve this situation. What would your role be? Explain why your recommendations would be successful.

3) A biographical sketch: In 500 words, tell us about yourself. Include your connection to your Boricua heritage, your family, interest, goals, dreams, career objectives, etc. Tell about any obstacles you have encountered as a single mother and how you have overcome them. Additionally, tell us about any volunteer community work you have participated in which involved the Puerto Rican community/Latino community (i.e. voter registration, census drives, neighborhood clean-up, mentoring, tutoring, youth groups, etc. What were your responsibilities.

4) One letter of recommendation (in PDF or DOC format): The recommendation letter should be requested from professors, counselors, mentors, clergy, community leaders, etc. The letter should highlight any challenges the candidate has experienced and overcome to continue their education, does the candidate do volunteer work/community service, how long has the person known the candidate, and the specific contributions the applicant has made to the community.

5) Academic transcripts (in PDF or JPEG format)

6) Headshot photo (one photo maximum 1MB in a JPEG format)
