The Academic Senate Committee on Academic Development/Elective Academic Programs met on November 11th, 2015, at 1:00 pm in S-418


Committee Members in Attendance:

Tirandai Hemraj-Benny (Chairperson); Nicole Lopez-Jantzen (Faculty); Ryan Moore (Faculty); Susan McLaughlin (Secretary), Vazgen Shekoyan (Faculty);Kathleen Landy (Director of CETL)


Business:

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm

1. Minutes of Oct. 7, 2015, approved.

2. Chairperson Tirandai Hemraj-Benny proposed that a permanent meeting time for the committee be established for the Spring semester.  Possibly Mondays from 12-1, dependent on committee members’ schedules for the spring semester.

3.  Discussion of charge.  Chairperson Hemraj-Benny reported her discussion with the steering committee for a better explanation for the charge of our committee.  The Senate Steering Committee suggested that the ADEC committee produce an idea for faculty development, and then work with CETL to promote the idea to the faculty.

4.  In discussion with Kathleen Landy, several ideas for workshops focusing on faculty development were discussed.

  a. Workshops to support faculty publishing, with possible emphases on the sciences vs. the humanities vs. the scholarship of teaching and learning

  b. Workshop on providing effective feedback to students to support their learning

  c. Workshop on effective pedagogical STEM teaching strategies

  d. Workshop on faculty pedagogical research in STEM

Final consensus: 2 workshops on providing effective feedback to students in (a) STEM writing and (b) humanities writing.

5.  The ADC committee can continue to work on a calendar of events to provide information to faculty members about campus events that could be incorporated into their classes.

7. Next meeting: sometime in December, to be determined based on the availability of committee members

8. Meeting adjourned at 2:00 pm.
