The Academic Senate Committee on Awards and Scholarships met on May 12, 2023, 10:00 AM via Zoom


Committee Members in Attendance:

Ryan Brannan, Benjamin Miller, Ewa Stelmach, Tim Keogh, Keba Sylla, Christine Pagano

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM

 

Meeting began with all of us discussing the Special Awards.

Ewa Stelmach was explaining to all the committee members that we usually do NOT give multiple awards out to one student even if they may be nominated more than once.

Ronnie Lukas clarified that it would be the president’s decision to choose the final candidates for either the JFK or MLK awards if it ever came down to two finalists for either award.

Discussed the Continuing Student Merit Scholarship. 

As a group, we discussed how we thought some of the student’s are not writing their own essays. They are instead, using a program which allows them to be computer generated. We all agreed that, In the future, we may ask students to focus more on their personal issues.

Ronnie Lukas stated that if a student has a very strong GPA, we should honor that, and not base it so much on their essay.  

Discussed the Barbara & Harry Sperber Scholarship for Part-time Students.

Ronnie Lukas discussed new business. Two brand new awards were introduced.  Jackson and Muriel Lum Endowment Scholarship Award &

We did not agree on our future meeting dates as of yet.
