CCAR Committee Meeting:

Date: Wed. Dec. 6, 2023

Room: S-316

Meeting started at 12:05pm

  • Oct. 4, 2023 meeting minutes were approved.
  • Jessica informed the committee that she had presented the activities of the CCAR at the FEC meeting.
  • Jessica gave an overview of several sample assignments from various departments (e.g. (1) communication, theatre, media production, (2) English, (3) foreign languages and literature) which were developed to raise awareness of the KHC and the Art Gallery.
  • Heather Huggins and Julian Jimenez (from communication, theater and media production) discussed how to help community members realize resources from the college’s cultural centers. Heather discussed a previous collaboration with Susan Agin from QPAC who approached Julian about producing a show that Julian had written. The title of the show is ``Julio Ain’t Goin’ Down Like That” which deals with the issue of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in Jackson Heights during the 1990s.  Heather also discussed working on a fellowship at Binghamton University which was for the Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention.  From this, Heather thought about ways to create public programming on this topic.  This ultimately lead to a discussion with Jeff Hall about activities that would support the LGBTQ+ community.  Heather hopes to create multiple pathways for faculty to get involved in this effort for Spring 2024.  Heather was interested in getting feedback from the CCAR committee on how to improve these activities and, in addition, would like the committee’s help in spreading the word on the aforementioned activities.
  • Julian discussed the programming scheduled for February which centers on his play ``Julio Ain’t Goin’ Down Like That”. Julian provided additional details about the play.  The play is about hate crimes and, in particular, tells the story of the first hate crime charged in NY state for the murder of Julio Rivera in 1990, a gay man in Jackson Heights.  Julian explained that the play was made possible with a grant and was originally presented at the KHC with the generous support of Laura Cohen.  Julian explains that Susan Agin saw the presentation at the KHC which prompted her to reach out to Julian to discuss producing the play at QPAC.  For the first three performances of ``Julio”, there will be a talk back to engage the audience.  The first talkback will consist of alumni from the original KHC reading of the play. Julian, Laura, and documentarian Richard Shpuntoff will form the panel on the second talk back which will focus on a celebration of protest.   The third talk back will be on education and activism where the panel will consist of Julian and former councilman Danny Drum who knew Julio Rivera and funded the grants that made the play possible.
  • Heather and Julian explained they are trying to come up with activities that would align all three cultural centers (QPAC, KHC, the Art Gallery) on the topic of violence against marginalized communities. For March, Heather has programming with the KHC which is aligned around the film  ``Bent” which is based on a play about a gay couple during the Holocaust.   There will also be an event which brings together two scholars which will focus the discussion on the relevancy of the film “Bent” in today’s world.  Later in March, there will be a two person play ``Letters from Anne and Martin” about Anne Frank and Martin Luther King. This play is a collaboration of the KHC and QPAC.  Heather also discussed opportunities for undergraduate research.
  • Jessica asked the question of whether the CCAR committee could have a Google doc with details on these activities. Heather and Julian informed the CCAR committee they would provide documentation on current activities once exact dates have been finalized.
  • Faustino suggested that some of the performances could also be held at the Art Gallery which has a wonderful theatre.
  • A headcount was taken on which committee members will be attending the Nutcracker on Dec. 15. Currently, Jessica and Franca will be attending.  Julia is interested in attending, but may be out of town on Dec. 15.
  • Faustino discussed an exhibition for students for Spring 2024 at the Art Gallery on drawings from Spain and Italy from the 15th and 16th
  • Laura discussed a number of upcoming lectures at the KHC which includes a lecture on Jim Crow and the Holocaust. The underlying theme in these lectures is the connection between past and present.  Laura will provide the committee with a complete list of these lectures.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:37pm.

Respectfully submitted,

     Jessica Prepetit
