The Academic Senate Committee on Committee on Food Insecurity of the Academic Senate met on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 1:00 p.m., Pantry Area, Student Union
Committee Members in Attendance:
Dr. Peter Bales (Chairperson), Social Sciences/History; Dr. Dorith Brodbar, Counseling; Dr. Jonathan Cornick, Math and Computer Sciences; Dr. Susan Jacobowitz, English; Dr. Jun Shin, Chemistry; Dr. Amy Traver, Social Sciences; Liz Di Giorgio (Secretary), Art and Design.
Business:
The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m.
The Committee will meet in the fall to consider how it will proceed in terms of pantry volunteers, schedule management, expanding hours of operation, and other operational issues. Issues regarding physical labor and greater access to the Pantry remain to be resolved. There are concerns about the rodents in the pantry location, as well as the quality of the food being offered.
The Committee discussed asking Dr. Lana Zinger to visit the Pantry in the fall to make recommendations regarding healthy food choices. It is noted that the quality of the food could be improved if the College switched from Amazon Prime to Amazon Fresh.
The Committee discussed its need for a scheduling coordinator, and its wish to meet with the Administration in the fall to discuss pressing operational issues. It remains for the new committee to decide what operational changes will be suggested for the Pantry and to clarify the support that is needed to keep the Pantry operational.
The minutes of this meeting were approved by the Committee members via an email request for approval made on May 9, 2019.
