Steering Committee Report March 2023

We call everyone’s attention to an opportunity for University-wide service as a member of the Common Core Course Review Committee (CCCRC). One faculty member from each CUNY unit serves a two-year term on the committee, and the committee reviews proposed courses from units to be placed in the Common Pathways Core. We invite Department Chairs to forward names of interested nominees to Sandra Palmer and the Steering Committee. QCC must send three nominees names to CUNY Central, from which CUNY will select one person to serve on the committee. If more than three nominees come forward, the Senate will vote in April on which nominees to advance. We thank Beth Counihan (Professor, Department of English), who is finishing her two-year CCCRC term.

The Faculty-Member-at-Large Senate nominee process has begun. Department Chairs, please encourage your faculty to run for one of fourteen Senate seats that will be vacant after the April Senate meeting. An email sent on Saturday, March 4th from Committee on Committees includes a link with which interested nominees can gather the seven required faculty signatures. The deadline for signatures to be submitted is March 18th.

A department may have as many as five senators (including Department Chair) serving as senators, and all departments except Communication, Theatre, and Media Production are eligible to be represented by nominees. Election season is a challenging time, with many complicated components. We are grateful to the Committee on Committees (Danny Sexton, Chair, Associate Professor, English; Julian Stark, Secretary, Associate Professor, Biology) and Raj Vaswani, IT for their ongoing work.

Senate Standing Committee selection is nearing completion. We thank all faculty who have stepped up to serve, and thank again Committee on Committees and Raj Vaswani. Christine Mooney (CoC past Chair, Professor, Business) has provided valuable support as CoC and Raj work together to streamline a very tricky selection process. The Senate will vote in April on Committee on Committee’s proposed committee roster ballot.

Budget Advisement Committee (Phil Pecorino, Chair, Professor, Social Sciences) thanks President Mangino and VP Faulkner for their commitment to faculty governance leader consultation as a budget reduction plan is prepared for submission to CUNY.

CUNY asks a lot of its faculty, and in uncertain times it’s often hard to find the energy to persevere. We are grateful to all our colleagues who continue to give of themselves cheerfully in service to our college, students, and to each other.
