This course covers the development, evolution and use of healthcare information technology in the healthcare industry. It is also designed to show how healthcare information management professionals serve the patient, physician, and the public by using the highest ethical standards to manage healthcare information through the use of both database software and paper formats.

Students will be able to:

  1. Describe the evolution of healthcare information management in paper-based, hybrid, and electronic formats and interpret how this evolution has caused growth and expansion of careers in this field.

  2. Discuss the technological requirements for an electronic health record system and identify components that comprise the EHR.

  3. Successfully use database technology that simulates the functioning of electronic health records.

  4. Identify standards for health record documentation for accreditation, compliance and risk management purposes.

  5. Explain legal, ethical, and medical issues in healthcare information management in written and/or verbal format.

  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the technical terminology related to the field of health information management technology in preparation for certification exams.

  7. Identify the users of health records, explain various functions of HIM hybrid and electronic environments, and discuss the importance of health records in all clinical and administrative responsibilities.

  8. Explain the types of healthcare data and how they are used to measure and improve quality-of-care delivery.

  9. Critique technological requirements for an electronic health record system and identify the components and ancillary systems for an EHR.

  10. Identify data standards, describe data storage options, and explain data security/confidentiality/privacy guidelines.
