The Academic Senate Committee on Committee on Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness met on September 23, 2020 at 12:15PM via secure online meeting

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 12:15 PM

1. Approval of minutes from May 20, 2020 meeting and approval of agenda.
   1. Minutes will be sent to Committee before posting on website going forward
   2. Approved minutes as edited (motion Barbara Rome, Christine (Mi-Seon) Kim second)
   3. Agenda approved without objections
2. Discussed scheduling and procedure for reviews of departmental 2020 year-end reports
   1. Very few reports submitted by the extended deadline over the summer.
   2. Artie said that the subject will be discussed at the Chairs’ meeting in October
   3. New system for teaching departments must be developed
   4. Discussion of Committee review tabled pending better picture of what the Committee will have to do.
3. Updated on revision of the Assessment Handbook
   1. Artie and Ian met with Barbara and Scott, though little progress was made over the summer; they welcome feedback going forward as well
   2. Update on progress: complete restart; goal to keep length down while clearly showing what types of assessment are occurring (Gen Ed, program, course, AES) and how (templates); it will note that programs with external accreditation may follow a different procedure
   3. Schedules (via curriculum maps) will hopefully be completed this year and posted on the Assessment website
   4. Raul reviewed the process being used in the Physics department; every course is being assessed every semester, if the faculty member assigned to coordinate it is doing so; some are assessed with pre- and post-tests in lecture and lab on 15 course outcomes which are mapped to gen ed and program outcomes
4. Discussed the format of departmental assessment reporting
   1. There was discussion of the use of standardized-test-type assessment problems that have been vetted (school-wide or nationally) for which outcome they assess, as is done by nursing, some chemistry classes, etc.
   2. The possibility of unit review instead of year-end review was discussed. The annual assessment report from each department feeds into program and unit review with format and process totally up to the department (committee, chair, etc.)
   3. There was discussion that reporting itself needs to be standardized; even with a template, reporting is inconsistent now.
5. Coordination with departmental assessment committee
   1. Chairs will be contacted by Amos & Christine to find departmental assessment committee contacts.
