The Academic Senate Committee on Committee on Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness met on December 16, 2020 at 12:15PM via secure online meeting


Committee Members in Attendance:

Raul Armendariz (Physics, 2021), Thomas Byrnes (Admissions, 2023), Chukwudi Ikwueze (Social Sciences, 2022), Christine (Mi-Seon) Kim (Library, 2021, co-Chair), Kevin Kolack (Chemistry, 2022, Secretary), Manuel Martinez (English, 2022), Amos Orlofsky (Biological Sciences and Geology, 2021, co-Chair), Biao Wang (Math, 2023)

Absent: Barbara Rome (Nursing, 2023), TBA (student representatives)


Liaisons in Attendance:

Arthur Corradetti (Dean for Institutional Effectiveness, President's Liaison), Ian Beckford (Director of Policy Analysis for General Education, Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning)

Absent: Stephen Hammel (Committee on Committees designee), TBA (Steering Committee designee)


Business:

The meeting was called to order at 12:20 PM

  1. Approval of minutes as amended from November 18th, 2020 meeting and approval of agenda.
    1. Minutes extensively discussed and approval deferred to next meeting
    2. Agenda approved without objections
  2. Report of the meeting with Prof. Steven Dahlke of the Steering Committee on Dec 2, 2020.
    1. He will discuss our proposal to send the Committee’s report to the Provost with the full Steering Committee and report back to this Committee in January.
    2. It was pointed out that the Provost already attends the Senate meeting where this Committee’s report is presented.
  3. Evaluation of departmental year-end reports.
    1. Thomas Byrnes reviewed HPED and Physics
    2. Dean Corradetti recommended pausing review of posted reports as nothing new will likely be learned, and the template/procedure is changing. Professor Orlofsky pointed out the Committee is charged with doing so.
  4. Old business
    1. A motion was passed that after the break, Profs Orlofsky and Kim will begin reaching out to departmental assessment committees to offer this Committee as a resource/source of assistance. Departmental reps may be invited to our meetings, perhaps.
  5. New business
    1. The Committee discussed the charge/recommendation to look at overall assessment on campus, including non-teaching departments.
  6. Next meeting TBA
  7. Meeting adjourned 2:05PM
