The Academic Senate Committee on Student Activities met on September 22, 2023 at 11:00AM (Virtual)


Committee Members in Attendance:

Wilfredo Moran, Ilse Schrynemakers, Kwang Hyun Kim Jennifer Klein, Raymond Volel, Alison Mello  Excused: Sybil White, Jacqueline Mulone


Business:

The meeting was called to order at 11:09 AM

1.) Called Meeting to Order: 11:09 AM (Virtual Meeting)

2.) Hold on Vote to Approve Meeting Minutes from May 09, 2023

  • Quorum not met for those in attendance at previous meeting

3.) Elections for Officers

  • Officers Elected in Spring 2023. Chairperson Moran asked members to consider serving as a chair at the end of his current term.

4.) Discussion of Fall 2023 Actvities

Student Survey

  • Members discussed creating and deploying a survey to students focused on event/campus communications. Past and current communication methods were discussed, including flyers, college website, and emails.
  • It was noted that questions shared from the previous survey need to be updated to reflect new methods of communications on campus such as the weekly emails students now receive.
  • Members supported the idea that a new focus of the survey be to gather data on how to assist students in reading their emails and accessing event communications.
  • A working list of questions will be sent to committee members before the next meeting. Members are encouraged to add to the document and share question ideas.

Faculty/Student Discussion Event

  • Members discussed the possibility of holding another faculty/student discussion event similar to the event held by the committee during the early shift to online learning.
  • Event timing, purpose, and format were discussed.
  • Members shared that there are existing events that supply students with information about departments and campus resources.
  • It was decided that focus of the event be reassessed, and the event placed on hold until a future semester. It was suggested that the event be redesigned to meet current student needs and provide support that is not addressed by other campus events.

5.) Involvement of Student Government

  • Chairpersons will work on scheduling a meeting with Student Government officers to inform them of support the committee can provide and extend upcoming meeting invitations. Raymond Volel assisted in initiating contact with current Student Government officers.
6.) Update from Student Activities
  • Raymond Volel shared that a new system (PRESENCE) has been rolled out to assist in data collection related to student events.
  • Student Government is in the process of planning a Halloween Event.
