Call for Proposals for the CUNY Professional Development Conference

Our second annual Professional Development Conference, to be hosted virtually on November 3rd and 4th, 2022, will continue to provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning amongst all of our CUNY faculty and staff. Last year's successful conference included 40 sessions that were conducted over the course of 2 days, with over 1,000 participants. We hope that with your help, we can do even better this year!

This year’s theme will focus on “The Future of Work, Finding Our New Normal.” If you would like an opportunity to present, please submit your conference session proposal by Friday, September 2nd. Please note that in order to complete the conference proposal form, you will need to log in with your Office365 username and password (i.e., username: John.Doe20@login.cuny.edu, password: your CUNYfirst password).

Additionally, we are looking for proposals this year that fall into one of the following core tracks:

  • Executive Leadership (i.e., Executive Coaching, Strategic Thinking)
  • Managerial & Supervisory Skills (i.e., Delegation & Feedback, Conflict Management)
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion/Cultural Competence (i.e., Unconscious Bias, Gender Bias)
  • The 3 C's (Communication, Collaboration & Customer Service)
  • Organizational Development (i.e., Process Movement, Project Management)
  • Employees Wellness (i.e., Stress Management, Well-being at Work)

Session Formats:
All proposed sessions should be 60 minutes in length. We encourage presenters to select formats that will allow them to deliver engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Proposals from individuals are welcome, as well as panel proposals. All sessions will be recorded and provided to CUNY employees at a later date.

Session Selection Criteria:
The UHR Professional Development & Learning Office will review all proposals in detail to determine which will be selected for the conference. Acceptances will be announced by the week of September 19th.

Please email University.Training@cuny.edu.with any questions or concerns; thank you for your participation.

CUNY/RFCUNY Travel Grant

FACULTY TRAVEL FOR GRANT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Faculty Travel for Grant Development program financially supports out-of-town travel so that CUNY researchers can further pursue the development of their grant proposals. All travel undertaken should pertain to meetings with proposal collaborators and/or representatives of external funders, such as federal agency officers or private foundation program officers. Applicants should provide evidence that an idea intended for grant funding is fully thought-out and ready for advanced planning and discussion. Applicants must also justify in-person travel as key to grant proposal development—what can be accomplished through in-person meetings that cannot be achieved through a phone call or videoconference? This program does not support attendance at conferences, workshops, or presentation engagements unrelated to the grant development purposes.

Additional guidelines

  • Only tenured and tenure-track faculty, or full-time researchers, are eligible to apply.
  • Awardees will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $750.
  • Eligible expenses for reimbursement include economy-class transportation, lodging, and/or meals not already provided by other institutional or special award sources. Awardees must observe the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) per-diem rates for these expenses.
  • Faculty and researchers are eligible for one award in a given fiscal year period.
  • Awardee travel must occur within the same fiscal year as the application. Reimbursement cannot be made unless this requirement is observed, even if the application was initially approved.
  • Awardees must provide documentation confirming their participation in the grant development meeting(s) and an accounting of expense details with receipts to validate all reimbursement claims. Reimbursement cannot be made unless this documentation is provided, even if the application was initially approved.

This program is not designed to fund the totality of travel expenses, but rather, to assist by defraying a significant portion of the costs. Awardees are also expected to explore and utilize other mechanisms to fund their trips.
Requests for reimbursement should be made promptly at the trip’s conclusion. Direct all reimbursement requests via email to Ingrid Valentin.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted using the online form below. Please answer all questions thoroughly—for instance, include the names and institutions of relevant sponsor representatives or proposal collaborators; describe the grant opportunity which you intend to pursue. Applications with insufficient detail will be returned for further clarification, delaying the travel support decision.

National Research Center on Hispanic Children & Families

Submission Deadline: July 6, 2022

The National Research Center on Hispanic Children & Families (the Center) is pleased to announce a new grant program for early career faculty at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) or Emerging Hispanic Serving Institutions aimed at supporting professional development activities that will enhance their professional growth as scholars and educators. The Center will provide awards of up to $2,500 to cover expenses related to early career scholars’ professional development. In addition, grantees will have the opportunity to participate in professional development and networking events organized by the Center, such as training in applying an equity lens to research communications and using Twitter professionally.

Advance Science Research Center Seed Grant (ASRC)

Submission Deadline: July 1, 2022

The Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) Seed Grant Program provides funding to CUNY researchers pursuing interdisciplinary STEM projects that strive to inform and potentially lead to improved human, societal, and environmental well-being in the years to come. We seek to support creative, collaborative, and convergent research that addresses complex questions relevant to the most pressing challenges in STEM. A primary goal is also to seed research that will become the basis for new external funding. As such, submissions that have a clearly defined research question and a goal to collect critical preliminary data for a future grant proposal will be prioritized.

The program encourages proposals that leverage the ASRC’s five Initiatives (Nanoscience, Photonics, Structural Biology, Neuroscience and Environmental Sciences), 15 core facilities, and their analytical and human resources through collaboration.

The 2022 Seed Program will award six 12-month, $20,000 grants (in Research Foundation funds) to CUNY tenured, tenure-track, or research-track faculty who are pursuing collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects that are well-defined, compelling, innovative, and have a potential to yield meaningful, rather than incremental, advances. Researchers in any STEM field may apply, but those that take advantage of the ASRC’s facilities and resources will be prioritized.

In addition, awardees will participate in a symposium at the end of the funding period to present their findings to researchers from across CUNY, with the opportunity to discuss next steps towards securing additional funding and peer-reviewed publication.

It is strongly encouraged that you discuss your proposal, prior to submission, with the ASRC Investigator(s) and/or Core Facility Director(s) that you propose to work with to ensure feasibility. However, it is expected that the PI take full responsibility for writing the proposal.

Please read the complete program guidelines (PDF) and required forms before beginning your submission.

ASRC-NSF Postdoctoral Research Training Program

Do you envision a faculty or industry career where you lead a team researching immensely challenging, globally significant scientific problems that could have a global impact? If your answer is yes, you need to check out TRANSPIRE at the ASRC (Advanced Science Research Center).

TRANSPIRE is a transdisciplinary dialogic pedagogy for conceptualizing research questions with transformative potential.

The project, funded by the National Science Foundation’s Germination program, allows researchers in STEM, Social Science, STEM Education, and perhaps some humanities fields to apply as long as it fits within the NSF’s areas of interest. Postdoctoral researchers who are at the stage of transitioning to an independent research position (as faculty or in Industry) are encouraged to apply.

Applications for TRANSPIRE, the ASRC’s NSF-funded postdoctoral training program, are now being accepted. The program aims to mentor postdocs embarking on independent research and scholarship by guiding them in formulating impactful research questions. Applications are due by June 30.

Anonymous Was A Woman Environmental Art Grants

Program Overview

The AWAW EAG will support environmental art projects that inspire thought, action, and ethical engagement. Projects should not only point at problems but aim to engage an environmental issue at some scale. Proposals should illustrate thorough consideration of a project’s ecological and social ethics. Projects that explore interdependence, relationships, and systems through Indigenous and ancestral practices are encouraged to apply.

The intended impact of the project is an important factor in the selection process. Environmental art projects that qualify for this program may focus on the following themes, but are not limited to:

  • Regeneration
  • Eco-social engagement
  • Decarbonization as decolonization
  • Ecofeminism
  • Climate change/climate collapse
  • Systems-restoration
  • Interspecies relationships
  • Natural or built systems
  • Recycling and repurposing
  • Clean energy production
  • Bioplastics

Selected projects must benefit the public in some way, and are required to have a public engagement component by June 30, 2023. The public engagement component must be free to attend, open to the general public, and must add value to the public sphere rather than solely benefiting the artist’s private gain. Online events are acceptable as long as they are attended by a live audience.

This grant is funded by Anonymous Was A Woman. If you would like to contribute to this initiative, please email awaw@nyfa.org.
